Day 1: Ljubljana
Located in the centre of Slovenia, Ljubljana is a city full of style and sophistication, history and monuments, churches and museums, any many great restaurants. Meet your tour leader and the other families in your travel group at a 5 pm welcome meeting. Continue the introductions over your first Slovenian dinner with your fellow family travellers (optional at your own expense). If you arrive with time to spare, you may want to get acquainted with this beautiful city on a stroll around its pedestrian-only city centre and the leafy banks of the Ljubljanica River. Crowned the Green Capital of Europe by the European Commission, Ljubljana is also renowned for its beautiful bridges, architectural style and lamp-lit streets.
Day 2: Bohinj
Start the day with an included breakfast, fuelling up for the long day of sightseeing and exploration. Let your leader show you around the city on an orientation walk, taking in the pedestrian have of the Old Town and its three squares. Stop at Preseren Square, dedicated to the Slovenian romantic poet, France Preseren. Flanked by a magnificent Franciscan church with a pink facade on one side and a bronze statue of Preseren on the other, with views of the Triple Bridge and Ljubljana Castle just beyond, you’ll feel like you’ve walked right into a scene from a postcard. Afterwards, travel by private minivan to Bled. With its mountainous backdrop, gorgeous lake and impressive cliff-top castle, Bled is the definition of scenic. Stretch your legs on an hour-long orientation walk. A visit to Bled isn’t complete without a visit to Bled Castle, so make the 15-minute walk to the castle set among the impossibly green pine and birch trees. Later, perhaps get your fill of culinary delights too with an optional lunch and tasting of Bled cream cake. Continue to Bohinj, stopping en route at the Blejski Vintgar Gorge, which is flanked by steep slopes overgrown with beech forests. Take a walk around the gorge on a trail that leads over wooden bridges and viewing galleries. Afterwards, continue to Bohinj, your base for the rest of the trip.

Your day is as clear as the alpine air, with plenty of optional activities on offer for families that want to stay active or sightsee. The lake that the Bohinj region is named for is famously beautiful – why not take in vistas of calm blue water flanked by forest and mountains on a boat ride around the water. After something to get the heart pumping? Nearby Bohinj Adrenaline Park offers guided high-ropes courses and a giant swing. Be aware children must be over 150 cm to participate in activities at the Adrenaline Park, and it is not appropriate for people with a fear of heights. The temperature in the caves is a cool 8 to 10 degrees Celsius so dress appropriately. Afterwards, continue to Predjama Castle. Built into the mouth of a cavern in the middle of a 123-metre (403-foot) cliff, Predjama is an engineering marvel and undoubtedly one of Europe’s most spectacular castles. If you didn’t previously, maybe head to the 100-metre (330-foot) high cliff-top castle. Dating from the 11th-century, the views from Old Bled Castle are nothing short of spectacular – take in the lake with the island and the southern foothills of the Alps.
